Our current issue...

Currently in class, we are talking about humanity, hope, and the human spirit.  When I think about this topic, the first thing I think of is death, destruction, and how we as a species cannot come to peace with one-another.  If we look to history, we see that humans continually do things that are against being united as one people.

My hope for this chapter is that we will not only explore how things how we do things wrong and how others recover because of those events, but that we can do things to make a difference in the world.  Even if it means helping out a small group of people, we will know that we have made a constructive effort instead of just studying something as we students always do in school.

  1. Eric, I think it's interesting that when you think of humanity, hope, and the human spirit the first things that come to your mind are the death and destruction that we humans have caused on one another. And I completely agree that as humans we've done more and more harm to ourselves through war, racism, hatred and all our other cruel actions. I also hope that through this unit we can actually have impact in the world, not just in the classroom. I'm glad that you seem to look at things through a historical perspective, I tend to do the same thing.

  2. Hey Eric,
I also think of death and destruction when the words hope and humanity come to mind. I think this is because when I hear the words humanity my brain process goes as follows: Humanity--> Mortality--> Death. When I think of hope, I never really think of average hope, like hopes to get into a good college, but the hope that abused and impoverished people have, because I think thats the strongest type of hope. It doesn't take much to have hope when everything in life is great, but when death is around the corner and you can still manage a smile... I think thats just wow. On your second point I think it's a great idea. It goes hand in hand with the Holocaust section of the unit. If we can find a common theme of hope from the most depressing events in history, then we most defeinently can have an impact on our community.

  3. I think the most important thing about GT is that we are willing to make a difference in the world. We are willing to take what we learned in the classroom and actually apply it. I agree completely with what you said. The fact that we have done more harm than good to each other is unfortunate but I have hope, as do many others in the species and one day it will be better by people getting an education. We need to understand each other before we can accept each other and we need to accept each other before can be at peace with one another.

  4. Ronak is right - our aim for this GT class is to give you an opportunity to make a difference in the world. With the I AM campaign, you've already done just that. Eric, I like this post because it's hopeful in and of itself. What do you think the first step of your research will be?

  5. Ms. Mystrena,

I am not quite sure what my first step will be. I figure that it will involve some way to show what we have been doing, or what we could do, for the school/community. Also, I may look at local community service projects for ideas.
